Degrees, Degree Cover and Honor Cords, Honors Designation, and Dean’s List:

Degrees, degree cover and honor cords will be mailed to you after virtual commencement. These items come from the Registrar’s Office. There is not an option to pick-up; all degrees will be mailed. Please make sure your address is up to date by looking in the Student Portal. If it is not, contact the Registrar’s Office to update your address;

You will receive an honors cord if you meet the following requirements

Baccalaureate Degree

To graduate with honors, an undergraduate student enrolled in a baccalaureate program must have received 60% (72 hours) of the credits earned for graduation at the University of the

District of Columbia. The honors system for baccalaureate degree students is (in all hours attempted):

3.30-3.59 Cum Laude

3.60-3.79 Magna Cum Laude

3.80 and above Summa Cum Laude

Associate Degree

To graduate with honors, an undergraduate student enrolled in an associate degree program must have received 60% (36 hours) of the credits earned for graduation at the University of the District of Columbia. The honor system for associate degree students is (in all hours attempted):

3.3 Honors

Master and Professional Degrees

These degree types do not receive Honor cords as they are expected to maintain a CGPA (cumulative) of 3.0 throughout their tenure in school.

Dean’s List

Dean’s List Certificates come out of your respective Dean’s office. Each college has a Dean. Please contact the Dean’s Office to inquire about mailing certificates. You may search for the Deans on the website.

A Dean’s List of all undergraduate students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 and a term GPA of 3.30 or higher is certified by the Chief Academic Officer at the end of each semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must have registered for a minimum of 12 credit hours. A student who fails, fails to complete, or withdraws from any course will be ineligible for the Dean’s List for that semester. Note: qualifying for the Dean’s List does not automatically qualify a student for University Honors’ eligibility.

Career Services Exit Activities

Graduation Exit Activity: First Destination Survey

As a graduating student, part of your graduation exit activities is to complete the First Destination Survey within your UDC Handshake account. The survey should be completed as soon as possible and at the latest by the day of your graduation. An overview and instructions for the First Destination Survey may be downloaded here. The UDC Graduating Classes of Fall 2020, Spring 2021, and Summer 2021 may access their unique First Destination Survey at this link:

What is the First Destination Survey (FDS)?

The First Destination Survey powered by Handshake is a brief 2-3 minute survey that engages graduating students and recent college graduates in telling the university about your career plans prior to graduation and career success after graduation. The First Destination Survey is part of the graduation exit activities at the university. Students may complete the survey during the semester in which you will graduation. Also, alumni will be resurveyed for a status update at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after graduation. In the survey, you will answer quick questions about your employment status and continued studies status regarding a job, internship, graduate school, still looking, and more. Students and alumni who complete the survey will be put into a drawing for prizes such as new electronics, gift cards, university paraphernalia, and etc. Data collected will help the university to develop academic programs and student services that align with the current job market and maintain the highest accreditation standards to ensure the value of your degree.

Need Help? Contact the UDC Office of Career Services

Students or alumni that need help with accessing and completing the First Destination Survey or need help with their career planning, career readiness, and/or career opportunities including jobs and internships, should contact their assigned Career Counselor in the Office of Career Services.
