Sandra Nkamgna

Student Representative

Sandra Nkamgna is an international senior student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. She is fluently bilingual, with French being her native language.  Sandra aspires to pursue a career in Telecommunications with a concentration in smart technology and renewable energy.

Coming to the United States of America from Cameroon to further her education was always Sandra’s dream. Seeing her mom successfully balance pursuing an education while raising twin girls and working full time as well as assisting her dad on several projects, anywhere from building a dog house to building the family home, were the best illustrations for her to never give up and always see all her endeavors through. Those values came in handy when Sandra attended Oklahoma City Community College in the fall of 2015 and made the Dean’s List a year into admission. Shortly thereafter, she was hired as an Engineering tutor for Math, Physics and Statics and elected as the Vice President of the Engineering Club. Sandra subsequently obtained an Associate of Science in Engineering.

In the spring of 2017 Sandra transferred to the University of the District of Columbia, upon being accepted into its School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ Electrical Engineering program. Eager to actively promote her roots, she joined the African Students Association and was instrumental in reviving it through establishing its constitution and by-laws, successfully planning and executing numerous events showcasing African culture, creating an online archival database and much more. The following semester, Sandra was hired as a teaching assistant for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ tutorial lab, adding Dynamics and Electrical Circuits to the other subjects she tutors. She was later elected as the African Students Association’s Events coordinator and three semesters into being a Firebird, she made the Dean’s List.

Of all the morals instilled in Sandra by her background, she always remembers her late paternal grandmother telling her, on her way to the U.S., that whatever it is she does, she should always strive to do it well. That is the driving force behind her commitment as the Student Representative to the Board of Trustees to not only work for and with her fellow students, but also to serve them to the best of her abilities.
