Online Learning Certification
Faculty must become certified to teach online at UDC, and the Center for the Advancement of Learning (C.A.L.) provides certifications for UDC faculty through a three-stage process. Faculty may become OTC or OBC-certified (see below).
Stage 1: Prerequisites
Complete the following Professional Development Workshops listed below:
The Blackboard Primer: (Required)
Note: The Blackboard Primer is a module-based online training that covers important aspects of the function and usage of Blackboard. This training should not take more than 18-20 hours to complete (this time frame may vary depending upon each users’ familiarity with technology). Blackboard is the Learning Management System (LMS) for our institution, and this training will assist faculty in using this LMS for online, face-to-face, and hybrid courses.
The Blackboard Primer is a required prerequisite for anyone wanting to enroll in the Online Teach-Only Certification.
In addition to the Blackboard Primer, one must complete at least (2) of the following workshops from the subsequent list if interested in enrolling in the Online Teach-Only Certification (OTC). These workshops are offered in an online asynchronous format (no face-to-face or scheduled meetings; however, assignments are a component & have specified due dates that must be met to ensure successful completion). Each of the following workshops should not take longer than 2 hours to complete.
- The ENHANCE Learning Model
- Creating Engaging Online Environments
- Rubric Relief
- Assessing the Student Learner
- Incorporating Learner-Centered Instruction into Online Courses
Lastly, Complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Workshop (APPQMR)
Stage 2: Online Teach-Only Certification (OTC)
- Complete the New to Online Essentials Workshop:
- OTC Capstone Session:
- Instructor receives OTC
Stage 3: Online Build Certificate (OBC)
- Complete module-based online asynchronous training
- During this training, you will build your course according to the QM standards while populating a Blackboard course-shell for a course you would like to teach
- The course is peer-reviewed
- Revisions (if necessary): You have one week to make revisions
- Instructor receives OBC
- Course is UDC certified
The Online Learning Academy (OLA) is no longer offered, and has been replaced by completing both the OTC & OBC. Enrollment deadlines differ each semester, and it is best to contact Dr. Thomas the semester prior to your intended enrollment.
