Political science student awarded prestigious Charles B. Rangel Fellowship

Venecia “Abbie” Ferguson was awarded a 2023 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship on November 18 following a highly competitive nationwide contest. A distinguished panel selected Ferguson out of almost 900 outstanding candidates. The Rangel Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by Howard University, supports extraordinary individuals who want to pursue careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. The Fellowship will support Ferguson through a two-year master’s degree in an area relevant to the Foreign Service. The award will also provide extensive professional development opportunities, including internships, mentors and skills training. As part of the Rangel Program, she will work for a Member of Congress on foreign affairs issues in the summer of 2023.

A legacy of nursing education: UDC provides decades of quality healthcare workers to the DMV

The University of the District of Columbia’s Nursing Program has a long history of serving the District with well-educated students. UDC is keeping pace with the national demand for nurses and health care professionals. The University offers two paths to fill the shortages in the medical field through its Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) and the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN) degree offered through the UDC Community College.

UDC Partners with Anacostia High School for Early College Program and STEM opportunities

The University of the District of Columbia is laying the foundation for Anacostia High School students to jumpstart their college careers through UDC’s Early College Program, in which students earn college credit while completing their diplomas.

The Early College Program is a part of the Community-to-Career Academy (C2 Academy) under UDC’s Developing America’s Workforce Nucleus (DAWN) Initiative. DAWN addresses the underrepresentation of minority STEM talent due to systemic racism or economic inequality. It redirects the public education pipeline to produce more business and entrepreneurship ready STEM talent in ethnic minority and disadvantaged communities.

U.S. Department of State and Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board select UDC professor to share her expertise in Namibia

Olive Vassell, associate professor and Digital Media Program coordinator, was selected for a Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Windhoek. Vassell is assisting with the journalism program’s curriculum review, establishing a student-run wire service, and teaching two courses, Journalistic Writing I and News Reporting & Writing. She will also engage students around her scholarship on Black Europe and the African Diaspora.

SBPA students experience life-changing trip to United Kingdom in first-ever study abroad course

This summer, the UDC School of Business and Public Administration (UDC-SBPA) offered the first-ever study abroad course in Nottingham and London, United Kingdom. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the BGMT 395 study abroad course was offered from June 30- to August 13, 2022, as an elective for the Logistics & International Trade (LIT) Analytics concentration. It can be counted as a business management elective for business majors across all SBPA disciplines and concentrations. Students can opt for this course across all schools and colleges at UDC. Engineering and non-business majors enrolled in the LIT analytics concentration can use this course effectively towards fulfilling LIT requirements.

Women’s tennis team player selected as East Coast Conference nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year Award

Simoné Pärn, a UDC graduate student in biology from Pärnu, Estonia, has been selected as one of two nominees to represent the East Coast Conference (ECC), advancing in the NCAA Woman of the Year process. Pärn is one of 151 student-athletes in the country chosen to represent their conferences.

Anacostia High School students earn hands-on STEM skills through DAWN’s Early College summer internship program

Several Anacostia High School students completed the inaugural UDC Summer Internship Program under UDC’s Developing America’s Workforce Nucleus (DAWN) Initiative. The interns presented findings from a community asset mapping project with the U.S. Department of Interior, UDC mentors and other government agencies. The group set out to assess Anacostia’s environmental landscape, identify challenges and share ideas toward a positive outlook for the Ward 8 community.
