UDC sponsors skills training conference for Anacostia High School students
Anacostia High School students during the SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Institute.As part of UDC’s DAWN initiative, four Anacostia High School students participated in the SkillsUSA Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI) from September 17-20, where they developed leadership and communication skills through various sessions. Activities included congressional visits, tours of different monuments and memorials, and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

UDC Partners with Anacostia High School for Early College Program and STEM opportunities
The University of the District of Columbia is laying the foundation for Anacostia High School students to jumpstart their college careers through UDC’s Early College Program, in which students earn college credit while completing their diplomas.
The Early College Program is a part of the Community-to-Career Academy (C2 Academy) under UDC’s Developing America’s Workforce Nucleus (DAWN) Initiative. DAWN addresses the underrepresentation of minority STEM talent due to systemic racism or economic inequality. It redirects the public education pipeline to produce more business and entrepreneurship ready STEM talent in ethnic minority and disadvantaged communities.
Anacostia High School students earn hands-on STEM skills through DAWN’s Early College summer internship program
Several Anacostia High School students completed the inaugural UDC Summer Internship Program under UDC’s Developing America’s Workforce Nucleus (DAWN) Initiative. The interns presented findings from a community asset mapping project with the U.S. Department of Interior, UDC mentors and other government agencies. The group set out to assess Anacostia’s environmental landscape, identify challenges and share ideas toward a positive outlook for the Ward 8 community.
UDC celebrates Anacostia High School students in the pilot summer internship program
As a part of the DAWN Initiative, UDC supported five Anacostia High School students in the pilot UDC Summer Internship Program, where students addressed real-world environmental justice issues through their work with the Department of Interior (DOI), UDC mentors, and other government officials. To mark the end of this program, the students presented their work at the Department of Interior on August 4, 2022, and attended a UDC-sponsored lunch on August 5, 2022, to celebrate their efforts. Event attendees included the families of these students, DOI and other government officials, UDC staff, and representatives from Anacostia High School.

UDC announces new Urban Waters Ambassador and Community to Career C2 Academy Director
In his new role slated to begin on April 18, Xavier Brown will serve as UDC’s “boots on the ground,” supporting the environmentally-focused Anacostia High School Redesign and driving the University’s educational partnership efforts with the Department of Energy and Environment, schools in the Anacostia High School feeder pattern and other schools in Ward 8, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and community leaders and residents in Ward 8. Brown will also serve as the Anacostia Ambassador in the Urban Waters Federal Partnership.
