Anti-Hazing Policy
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) has a strict Anti-Hazing Policy. This policy, enforced under UDC Code of Student Conduct, prohibits any activity causing mental, physical or psychological harm. Activities include, but are not limited to, forced substance use, abuse, or actions creating fear, and cover all student groups requiring education for new members. The policy aligns with federal law changes (Stop Campus Hazing Act), defines hazing broadly (including legal violations), bans retaliation, provides reporting channels through the Office of Student Conduct, and emphasizes education and consequences for individuals and organizations.
Key Aspects of UDC’s Policy
- Broad Definition: Hazing includes activities like striking, shocking, causing fear or forcing substances, even if the person seems to agree, and criminal acts.
- Scope: Applies to all student organizations (fraternities, sororities, athletic teams, Faculty, Staff, etc.) and covers off-campus as well as online behavior.
- Education: Mandatory United Educators online anti-hazing training for students, faculty, and staff, anti-hazing training for UDC Greek Life Organizations to educate potential new members on risks, including hazing prevention, bystander intervention, and substance abuse.
- Reporting and Non-Retaliation: Good faith reports are encouraged, and retaliation (harassment, threats) against reporters is prohibited.
- Consequences: Violations are addressed under the Code of Student Conduct, resulting in serious sanctions for individuals and groups, with investigations overseen by the Office of Student Conduct. Violations for Faculty and Staff will be overseen by Public Safety and/or Human Resources.

Allegations of hazing that involve suspected or alleged sexual harassment should be reported to the UDC Title IX Office regardless of the role of the respondent. Designated reporters must report this information to the Title IX office pursuant to their responsibilities under the UDC Policy Title IX Policy and Procedure.

UDC’s Complaint Procedures, Penalties and Sanctions
All members of the University of the District of Columbia’s community are expected to demonstrate due diligence, care and support in preserving and upholding all institutional, local, state, and federal laws. Students and employees are subject to prosecution under applicable local, state or federal laws, and penalties imposed by external law enforcement entities, and any applicable disciplinary action imposed by the university.
University community members who are found to have violated institutional policies through the procedures and systems prescribed in the university’s policies and regulations are subject to sanctions, up to and including suspension, expulsion, or termination, as applicable. The university reserves the right to proceed with disciplinary action even if criminal proceedings are pending against the individual. The outcome of a disciplinary action will not be subject to challenge because criminal charges involving the same incident were dismissed or reduced.
Complaints received against students are forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct. The Student Handbook provides a comprehensive outline of student policies, regulations, and disciplinary sanctions, as well as the Code of Student Conduct. The Student Handbook is available here. Complaints received against employees are forwarded to the Office of Human Resources for a resolution consistent with University and District policies and regulations. If an employee or student exhibits disorderly behavior or poses dangerous or immediate threat, members of the University community are strongly encouraged to contact UDC Police Department immediately.

Office of Student Life’s Commitment to Hazing Prevention and Building a Strong Greek Community Trainings:
- Greek 101 Trainings: Offered to provide new members with essential knowledge about Greek life, anti-hazing policies and expectations.
- Hazing Prevention Workshops: Hosted during key events like Week of Welcome, Homecoming and Orientation to ensure ongoing education and awareness.
- NPH Council Reestablishment: Working to reestablish the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) to strengthen education on Greek life, promote anti-hazing initiatives and provide community-building opportunities.
- Engagement in Campaigns: Actively involved in campaigns such as “These Hands Don’t Haze” and Hazing Prevention Week to raise awareness and foster a safe, supportive environment.
- Professional Development Opportunities: Collaborating with the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) to offer leadership and development opportunities for Greek members.
Annual Crime Statistics for Hazing from January 2020 through December 2025
UDC Police Department and the Office of Student Conduct have not received any reports of hazing on or off UDC-owned or leased properties from January 2020 through December 2025.
UDC Police Department and the Office of Student Conduct have not received any hazing reports about any student organizations on or of UDC properties that would have involved UDC students, faculty or staff from January 2020 through December 2025.
