Update on Facilities Emergency as of Friday, Oct. 23

Following Tuesday morning's electrical incident originating in the mechanical room of Building 42, power disruptions impacted Buildings 32, 38, 39, 42, 43 and 47.

Power has since been restored to Buildings 38, 39, 43 and 47. Buildings 56 and 71 were not impacted by this incident. Additionally, Buildings 44, 46 east and 46 west were unaffected and remained fully operational throughout the event.

The university's electrical contractor continues to assess the damage and determine options for restoring and redistributing power to Buildings 32 and 42. As a result, Buildings 32 and 42 will remain closed through Monday, Nov. 2, while assessments are completed and necessary repairs or equipment replacements are identified and implemented.

Academic Operations

  • The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) will remain under Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI) while Buildings 32 and 42 are unavailable.
  • Classes for all non-SEAS students will resume normal operations.
  • Classes at the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law, Community College, Congress Heights campus and DCA Aviation Hangar will continue as scheduled.

Administrative Operations

  • Administrative and support functions at the Van Ness campus will resume normal business operations and maintain regular business hours.

Guidance for SEAS Faculty and Staff

  • SEAS staff should contact their immediate supervisors regarding remote work expectations.
  • SEAS faculty should consult their supervisors for ERI-related guidance.
  • The Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL) remains available to support instructional continuity, including Blackboard, Zoom and other teaching and learning technologies.

Guidance for SEAS Students

  • Due to this facilities emergency, SEAS in-person operations will remain suspended through Monday, Nov. 2. Instruction will continue remotely through both synchronous and asynchronous formats.
  • Courses requiring laboratory, clinical, studio or other hands-on instruction may require makeup sessions. However, every effort will be made to maintain academic continuity through virtual learning whenever possible. Faculty conducting synchronous instruction should continue to meet during published class times to minimize disruptions to student schedules.

UDC Van Ness Campus, 4250 Connecticut Ave, 2nd Floor, Room 2414 (The building with the Firebird Millennium Cafe)

Except for holidays and university closings

Mondays: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Tuesdays: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Wednesday: 2 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Thursdays: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Fridays: 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

You can open the door to Room 2414 with your UDC Student ID during the identified days and hours only.

How to Register for Access to the Market

You cannot access the market if you do not follow the instructions below.

  1. Complete the Registration Form Each Semester
    To access food services, each UDC student wanting to pick up groceries/toiletries must complete and submit the UDC Firebird Market registration form once per semester. When the form is completed, it will take 48 to 72 hours to verify and program individual student IDs with access to the market in Building 4250, Room 2414. The current form is also available on myUDC. To find the current form:
    1. Log into myUDC
    2. Click the Student Information Tab/Page
    3. Click Firebird Market
  2. Have Your UDC OneCard Encoded
    After registering, you must have your ID card encoded at the UDC Police Department. The UDC OneCard station is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Building 39, Level C.
  3. Tap Your UDC OneCard on the Salto Lock Box
    Once your OneCard has been encoded, tap your ID on the Salto Lock Box (gray or black) until the light turns green.

Market Rules

Please read and follow all instructions and rules. Not adhering to the rules one time will result in suspension of market access, determined by a case-by-case instance.

  1. Register for the market each semester.
  2. You must be an enrolled UDC student for the active academic semester.
  3. Check-in on the iPad BEFORE ENTERING the market every time you visit.
  4. Do not allow anyone else to enter the market with you.
  5. No more than ONE person in the pantry at one time, unless from the same household. The next person MUST wait in the hallway.
  6. Each individual is allotted 10 minutes to collect items.
  7. Adhere to every sign displayed in the market.
  8. Do not take more of an item than the sign indicates. Do not hoard. Share.
  9. Leave items the way you found them, organized and neat.
