UDC Student Health Insurance Requirement

If you have a current, active U.S.-based health insurance policy, then you can attempt to waive the student health insurance plan.

All waiver processes must be completed successfully before the published deadline.

Remember! To waive/decline/opt out of the school-sponsored program, students at the University of the District of Columbia must provide proof of comparable health insurance coverage and successfully complete the online waiver process, or they will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan managed by Aetna.

1. Go to Aetna's website.
   • You will need your student ID number and date of birth to access the waiver form.
2. Your waiver must be completed in its entirety. You will be asked for detailed information about your current coverage, so have the following available:
   • A copy of your insurance ID card or proof of coverage letter
   • Insurance company name, policy holder's member ID and group number
   • The primary subscriber’s/policy holder’s name
3. When ready to proceed, click “Waive Coverage” to WAIVE or DECLINE the university’s health plan.
   • Please be cautious with spelling/capitalization when typing in names and other information. Double-check your application prior to submission. Typing errors may result in problems with data conversion and/or issues with your application being accepted.
   • You may not make changes or re-enter the waiver application once it is submitted.
4. Allow 2-3 business days for processing.

• Please monitor your designated university email inbox for updates from Aetna.
• If your waiver application is approved, the waiver credit will post to your student account within approximately five business days from the date of approval.
• If your waiver application is approved, you will not be required to waive again for the remainder of the current academic year. However, you will need to waive again during your first semester of attendance (starting in the fall) for each academic year you attend UDC.
• If your waiver application is declined, you will be notified by email.

If you do not have a current, active U.S.-based health insurance policy, then you cannot waive the student health insurance plan.

Health insurance is required to attend UDC. If you do not have sufficient time to obtain and upload proof of health insurance coverage before the waiver deadline, you should opt into the student health insurance plan.

1. Go to Aetna's website.
   • You will need your student ID number and date of birth to access the opt-in form.
2. When ready to proceed, click “Enroll Now” to ENROLL in the university’s health plan.
   • Please be cautious with spelling/capitalization when typing in your name and other profile information. Double-check your application prior to submission. Typing errors may result in problems with data conversion and issues with your application being accepted.
3. Allow 2-3 business days for processing.

Please note that the UDC Student Health Plan covers health insurance only. If you desire dental coverage, you must enroll and pay for this policy separately during the enrollment period by visiting Aetna's website.

• Visit Aetna's website for more information about your new health insurance policy.
• Allow 2-3 business days for your policy to be created.
• Please review your policy online and take careful note of policy coverage dates. Typically, an annual policy (when enrolling in the fall semester) has coverage from August 11 of the current year through  August 10 of the following year.   
• Do not attempt to use your health insurance until your insurance coverage is active. Any medical charges incurred before or after your policy coverage dates will not be covered by the health insurance and you will have to pay out of pocket for these charges.
• Please note that you will not automatically receive an insurance card in the mail, but you can request or access a copy online.
• Aetna is a paperless policy, so all actions are managed online. Access and log in to your Aetna.com account.
