UDC Student Health Insurance Requirement

What You Need to Know About Student Health Insurance at UDC

All students enrolled at the University of the District of Columbia are required to have adequate health insurance to provide coverage for medical and mental health care needs in the event of illness or injury.

All enrolled full-time, part-time and international students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan in their first term of each academic year, starting each fall. Students wishing to waive (decline) the policy must do so before the published waiver deadline to have the health insurance charge removed from their student account.

To waive/decline/opt out of the school-sponsored program, students at the University of the District of Columbia must provide proof of comparable health insurance coverage and successfully complete the online waiver process, or they will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan managed by Aetna.

Please Note!

Even if you waived the health insurance in a prior term, all students must submit a new waiver when they are charged for health insurance in their first term of each academic year of attendance, starting with the Fall semester.

Details About the UDC Student Health Plan

Eligibility

  • Beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year, eligibility for enrollment in the student health insurance plan will be limited to UDC students under age 65.
  • Students taking Workforce Development, Continuing Education or Dual Enrollment courses are not eligible for student health insurance. They cannot opt into and do not need to waive the insurance plan.
  • Students who turn 26 during the academic year and “age out” of their parents’ insurance policy may have the option to enroll in the student health insurance plan outside of the usual enrollment period (qualifying life event). This action must be completed within 30-60 days. Contact Aetna customer service at 1-877-480-4161 for details.

Coverage

  • The Aetna Student Health Plan, University of the District of Columbia Policy includes both health and vision coverage.
  • Dental insurance is also available through Aetna; however, students must enroll in and pay for this coverage separately. This action can only be completed during the open enrollment period.

Reminders for Form Completion

If you need health insurance and intend to enroll in the UDC Student Health Plan, it is important that you complete the “opt-in” process as soon as possible to ensure timely health insurance coverage. Do not wait to be automatically opted into the plan, as this may take weeks or months to be finalized, and you will be without proof of health insurance coverage during that time period.

If you do not waive/decline/opt out of health insurance coverage by the designated deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in the university-sponsored health plan and charged the applicable cost for the semester. Once enrolled in the insurance plan, coverage cannot be canceled, and the cost will not be refunded.

Important!

Before you can attempt to waive or opt into the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must:

1. Be registered for UDC classes, and
2. Wait at least three business days for processing
