Moving-In
Timeline
Fall 2025 move-ins begin Aug. 16. Detailed information about logistics will be sent once your housing is confirmed.
Checking In
At check-in, you’ll pick up your keys, finalize paperwork and receive housing access. Check-in is conveniently located on campus at the Van Ness–UDC Metro stop.

Check-In Tips
- Bring a photo ID (student ID or driver’s license).
- Plan for help—friends or family can assist with boxes and heavy items.
- Set up Wi-Fi and other tech once you arrive.
- Inventory your room—take photos of existing furniture and appliances to document their condition.
- Meet your roommate (if assigned) and coordinate shared items (e.g., microwave, vacuum).
- Explore amenities—check out the fitness center, study lounges and outdoor spaces.
School Breaks
You may remain in housing during fall, winter and spring breaks, but not during summer. If you plan to stay over a break, notify the housing office in advance.
If You’re Leaving for a Break
- Unplug all unused appliances, including fans, lamps and chargers.
- Close and lock all windows and doors.
- Turn off faucets and check for leaks.
- Clean your apartment and remove all trash and perishable food.
- Secure valuables—take home electronics, medications, passports and other important items.
- Set the heat to 68–72°F during winter break to prevent freezing and maintain comfort (optional).
Moving Out at Semester’s End
Check-Out
You must check out within 24 hours after your last final or by the official community closing time—whichever comes first.
You can choose a traditional or express check-out.
Traditional Check-Out
Schedule an appointment with your RA. They will inspect your apartment and discuss any damages.
Express Check-Out
Drop off your keys and leave. Note: You waive the right to appeal any damage charges.
Steps:
- Pick up your express envelope.
- Clear out and clean your space.
- Drop in your keys and signed statement.
- No ability to dispute charges later.
Move-Out Checklist
- Remove all personal belongings. Check common areas and mailboxes.
- Clean and sanitize the kitchen, bathroom, linens and floors.
- Unplug and defrost refrigerators and microfridges. Prop doors open to air them out.
- Dispose of trash properly—do not leave it in hallways.
- Close and lock all windows and doors. Turn off lights, fans and water. Set thermostats if needed.
- Return beds, dressers, and desks to their original positions.
- Return keys and complete the check-out receipt via the portal or envelope.
- Report any maintenance issues to the housing office or facilities team before leaving.
