UDC Operating Remotely on Friday, Jan. 30

The University of the District of Columbia’s academic and administrative offices will conduct business remotely on Friday, Jan. 30. All on-campus activities, including athletic-related activities, are cancelled.

Campuses will reopen on Monday, Feb. 2.

Staff: Contact your immediate supervisor with questions or for further instruction regarding remote work expectations. 

Faculty: Reach out to your immediate supervisor and/or the dean for questions and further instruction regarding the transition to emergency remote instruction (ERI).  The Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL) is available to support faculty with instructional continuity, including support for Blackboard, Zoom, Webex and other teaching and learning technologies.

Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Lamont Atkins

Lamont Akins is a seasoned transformational leader with over two decades of multifaceted experience spanning public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Akins is currently serving as Director of Governmental and External Affairs at Pepco. He is responsible for engaging in stakeholder relations with local officials, community leaders and businesses, consumer and nonprofit organizations within the Pepco DC region, including advocating, shaping policy and managing issues to deliver value to our customers and key stakeholders.

Before his tenure at Pepco, Akins served as the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs (MOCA) under DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration, where he led community-driven partnerships, orchestrated crucial initiatives and oversaw 13 constituent service offices and 12 DC Government boards/commissions, all of which function as crucial conduits between residents and the Executive Office of the Mayor.

Prior to his role with Mayor Bowser, Akins served as the Director of Constituent Services for At-Large DC Councilmember Anita Bonds and has contributed significantly to various community development and public affairs roles with notable organizations such as AARP, Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, and the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development.

An Arkansas native, Akins holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a Master of Science in Community Development from Delta State University. He actively contributes as a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of the District of Columbia and the Board of Directors for StepAfrika!

With a deep-rooted dedication to service, Akins is a valued lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Akins resides in the vibrant Brightwood Park neighborhood of Ward 4 in the District of Columbia.
