Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Please continue to check our website and social media channels for the latest information.

If you have any safety concerns, contact OPSEM at 202-274-5050. For all immediate emergencies, call 911.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and to UDC’s mission.

UDC Officially Launches New Strategic Plan: “Delivering on the Promise”

Delivering on the Promise

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) officially launched its new five-year strategic plan, Delivering on the Promise, an historic occasion held as part of the university’s “Firebird Reunion” homecoming celebration. The event included university stakeholders, students, faculty and distinguished speakers, including UDC President Maurice D. Edington and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Delivering on the Promise represents a bold new chapter for UDC, outlining the university’s vision for 2024-2029. Built on three pillars—excellence in student achievement, alignment with workforce needs, and impactful community service—the plan is designed to propel UDC forward as a leading institution in the District and across the nation.

“Our vision is simple: we excel, we work, we serve,” said Edington. “These values have always been part of our DNA. As a public university and a proud HBCU, UDC has produced generations of high achievers, prepared students for successful careers and inspired leaders who give back to their communities. Now, we are doubling down on that commitment. This strategic plan represents our path to becoming the world-class flagship university for the nation’s capital.”

The plan outlines ambitious goals such as doubling the number of degrees awarded annually, improving student retention, expanding dual enrollment and early-college programs and enhancing academic support services. It also includes strategies to increase scholarships, financial aid and research funding and strengthening UDC’s impact in the local workforce and broader community.

Mayor Bowser, a longtime UDC champion, emphasized how the District’s success is tied to the university’s success.

“UDC is not just the District’s university – it is an essential partner in our ability to create pathways to the middle class for D.C. residents and build a strong future for our city,” said Bowser. “When UDC succeeds, Washingtonians succeed. Our public education system is a bright spot in the story of D.C.; I’m proud that UDC is part of that story, and we look forward to working together to meet the goals laid out in this strategic plan.”

UDC is already making a significant impact: Last year alone, student-attorneys from the David A. Clarke School of Law provided over 33,000 hours of free legal services to the community. The Firebird Farm and urban food hubs donated more than four tons of fresh produce. UDC also continued its important work with underserved youth in the District, including through a recent environmental justice internship for high school students.

“We’re unstoppable when we come together—when we invest in each other and in a shared vision of greatness for this university—as one UDC,” said Edington. “This plan positions us to continue serving as a national model for urban student success, a powerhouse for workforce development, and a research hub tackling the District’s most pressing challenges.”
