Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Please continue to check our website and social media channels for the latest information.

If you have any safety concerns, contact OPSEM at 202-274-5050. For all immediate emergencies, call 911.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and to UDC’s mission.

Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness

OPIE

Welcome to the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness

The mission of the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OPIE) is to:

  • Support the University’s commitment to excellence and quality by collaborating with the University of the District of Columbia System’s academic, operational, and academic support units to ensure strategic objectives are benchmarked and become operational.
  • Identify and recommend solutions to enhance educational programs, administrative policies and procedures and educational support services.

OPIE will use data and practical assessment, through working with both academic and business units, to achieve solutions that support student learning and align with institutional strategic goals and accreditation requirements. The office will assist in developing strategic and tactical planning processes, facilitating policies that ensure data integrity and providing insight into data to inform and enhance decision-making. OPIE will help identify the institution’s overall internal capacity to achieve strategic objectives set forth by executive leadership.

Assesment

At the University of the District of Columbia, assessment is an institution-wide priority. We believe that understanding the “cumulative effects of the educational process” (Banta and Palomba, 2015, p. 10) means gathering evidence on student learning, engagement, and institutional effectiveness across all major units—to realize the goals established in our strategic plan. To that end, UDC’s cycle of continuous improvement is utilized across the entire institution as a guide to develop and support assessment processes and practices that are integrative and aligned.

Business Process Management

The COVID-19 pandemic brought or exacerbated many challenges to higher education institutions. It spotlighted the need for innovative, efficient business operations to serve institutions by reengineering archaic processes and introducing new hybrid working systems. In response, the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OPIE) established the Department of Business Process Management to work hand in hand with UDC business units to examine and implement the changes needed to establish more efficient and effective University processes.
