Student Employment Program (SEP)

The student employment program (SEP) is designed to offer students an opportunity to use and develop their skills, creativity, and responsibility by applying concepts learned in the classroom to an employment environment and at the same time, providing a worthwhile service to the University.  Also, the program offers the student a great opportunity to obtain and sharpen valuable skills from a University simulated employment search exercise.  SEP is funded through matching funds allocated by the University in accordance with federal guidelines for financial assistance program.

Eligibility:
Students desiring work in the program must be:

  • Seeking an academic degree at the University which means currently enrolled in a degree granting program;
  • Classified as a second semester undergraduate or graduate student;
  • In good academic standing - 2.0 GPA or higher and;
  • Without any current or pending University of the District of Columbia Code of Conduct violation(s)
  • In possession of a Social Security number or capable of obtaining one.

Requirements:
Student participants of the program must adhere to the following:

  • Meet the eligibility requirements;
  • Draft and submit a cover letter and resume to the Career & Professional Development Center Bldg. 38 Rm. A-18;
  • Complete and submit a SEP Worker application to the Career & Professional Development Center Bldg. 38 Rm. A-18;
  • Provide a copy of current class schedule, a most recent report card and/or transcript
  • Participate in the interviewing stage of the SEP Employment Process;
  • Attend the Career & Professional Development Center/UDC Office of Human Resources Orientation Session;
  • Attend and/or participate in the Career & Professional Development Center and/or Division of Student Affairs scheduled events.
  • Sign the Career & Professional Development Center/TRIO Program Agreement, if applicable

Student Process :

  • Review SEP Eligibility and Requirements;
  • Obtain A Student SEP Application;
  • Complete and submit the SEP Application along with your cover letter and resume by the appropriate date;
  • Provide verification of SEP eligibility and requirements;
  • Follow the Student Employment Process

Student Employment Process:
Student: obtains work –site placement form from the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Building 39, room 301-1 and takes the form to the supervisor of the proposed work site.

Work Site/Office:
The supervisor (or his or her designee) interviews the student candidate; completes the Placement Form (i.e., accepts or rejects for employment); retains a copy for hi or her records; and returns remaining copies to the student.

Student: Returns to Building 39, room 301-1 with the Placement Forms.

Placement Office: Reviews the work-site Placement Forms. Refers student to the Office of Human Resources (if accepted for employment) or arranges another interview for the student (if not accepted for employment).

Student: Reports to the Office of Human Resources, Bldg.38, room 301, Monday and Friday, 1:00 p.m.-4:00p.m or Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00am-12:00 noon, to complete the required employment forms.

Human resources Office: Provides the student with Entrance On Duty (EOD)
Forms to complete. The University’s Office of Human Resources determines the start date for the student according to the University’s pay period dates.

Student: Reports to his or her work site on the date specified by the Office of Human Resources.

Work Site/Office: Request for revisions to this placement should be directed to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at 202.274.5210.

Employment dates: SEP commences at the beginning of the fiscal cycle, October 1st.
