Anika Spratley Burtin, interim dean of the University of the District of Columbia's new School of Education and Learning Sciences, has been selected as an Impact Academy Fellow by Deans for Impact, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening educator preparation.
Burtin joins a cohort of 24 education leaders from across the country selected for their commitment to preparing future teachers to meet the evolving needs of students, schools and communities. As educator-preparation leaders navigate a rapidly evolving landscape — from emerging technologies such as AI to changing workforce needs, enrollment pressures, shifts in education policy and more — the yearlong fellowship equips participants to lead organizational change, strengthen school and community partnerships and advance evidence-based teaching practices.
"This opportunity comes at an exciting moment for the School of Education and Learning Sciences as we build on UDC's longstanding legacy of both serving the District and shaping its future through education," said Burtin. "I'm honored to join a national community of leaders committed to strengthening teachers and the teaching profession, and I'm excited to bring new ideas and perspectives back to UDC as we continue preparing students to make a lasting, positive impact in their classrooms and communities."
Over the course of the year, fellows will participate in monthly in-person and virtual learning sessions, receive one-on-one coaching from veteran education leaders and collaborate with peers from across the country to develop solutions to some of the field’s most pressing challenges.
