The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is proud to announce its successful review and reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This major institutional milestone affirms that the university meets the highest standards of academic quality, governance, planning and financial sustainability—underscoring UDC’s unwavering commitment to student-focused excellence.

“Middle States reaffirming our accreditation is a meaningful acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication that fuels UDC each and every day,” said Chief Academic Officer April Massey. “It represents the vision, determination and spirit of our entire Firebird community—and our shared commitment to delivering on the promise we make to every student we serve.”

Accreditation is more than a requirement—it reflects the confidence that peers, partners and the public have in UDC’s ability to educate, empower and serve. The rigorous multi-year process includes a self-study, peer evaluations and extensive documentation that speaks to continuous improvement.

This successful review is the result of a campus-wide effort that united faculty, staff, students and leadership in advancing the university’s mission and values. It also has significant practical benefits for the institution and its students: continued eligibility for federal funding and financial aid as well as enhanced public trust in the university as a home for high-quality education.

“This is a moment of celebration and an exciting springboard into our next chapter,” said UDC President Maurice D. Edington. “As the only public university in the nation’s capital and the country’s second-oldest HBCU, UDC continues to meet the moment by expanding academic offerings, investing in student support services and fostering innovation across all levels of learning, from workforce credentials to Ph.D. programs. The work continues—and UDC is ready.”
