CAUSES Associate Dean William Hare and Chief of Advancement Richard L. Lucas, Ph.D., met with U.S. Congressman Glenn Ivey (D-MD) on July 11, 2025, to share information about the UDC Firebird Farm (i.e., its land-grant program) and its potential to further advance community and economic development in the District and the broader region. The discussion underscored UDC’s commitment to strengthening urban agriculture, enhancing food security, expanding workforce development and advancing sustainable community initiatives.
Rodney Trapp, VP for Advancement, was named the recipient of the 2025 HBCU Innovation Solutions Award, presented by the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation, for his project titled “Innova Collective Ventures.” It is a shared-services model Rodney designed to help HBCUs accelerate research commercialization and generate long-term institutional wealth. The initiative is being developed with the support of an exceptional team of UDC doctoral students in engineering, computer science and urban leadership—and underscores the broader role UDC is playing as a hub for equity-driven entrepreneurship, inclusive research and systemic change. This national recognition includes a $10,000 grant and continued access to expert consulting through the Foundation’s E3 program. The event was at the at the 2025 HBCU Philanthropy Symposium, July 8, 2025, in Orlando, FL.
Former UDC Trustee Barrington Scott presents a $1,000 check to the UDC Foundation, from his Academic Excellence Awards Foundation, at their annual TAE Awards event held on April 17, 2025, at UDC. The money is for student grants, and Chief of Institutional Advancement, Dr. Richard Lucas, accepted on behalf of the Foundation—and then managed to raise another $2300 from attendees after the check presentation!
Institutional Advancement’s Major Gifts Director, Maria Guillory, accepts the $250K check from Home Depot for their Campus Improvement Grant initiative for HBCUs. It will support UDC’s Firebird Farm, which is managed by our College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability & Environmental Sciences (CAUSES). The event was held in Atlanta, GA, April 14, 2025.
