Music - AA

Program Overview

Associate of Arts in Music

The Associate of Arts in Music provides specialized professional training in various disciplines of music and general courses for cultural enrichment. The program has a rich history of involvement in cultural and outreach activities within the community, and provides a vital cultural resource for the university and the metropolitan area at large.

The Music Program offers three areas of concentration: instrumental, keyboard, and vocal. The program prepares students for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music degree program options and concentrations at the university and provides the basic preparation for a career in music.

To be admitted to any of the degree programs, students must apply to the program, audition in their performance area(s), and pass the placement examinations.

On completion of the program students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the technical skills, musicianship, and understanding of repertory as solo and ensemble performers in one major performing area at a level appropriate to the concentration;
  • Comprehend the organizational patterns and common elements of music and apply this understanding to aural, verbal, and visual analyses;
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of music history and repertories appropriate to the concentration;
  • Utilize basic technologies and applications that are current to their area of concentration; and,
  • Integrate the musical knowledge and skills learned over the course of study in preparation for a career in music or transfer to a four-year program.
