Albert Pearsall III, an assistant professor of business at the UDC Community College (UDC-CC), was named a regional recipient of the 2022 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). ACBSP is the only specialized body for business schools that presents an award recognizing excellence in teaching.

Pearsall will be honored with other regional recipients at the ACBSP Conference from June 17-20 in Washington, D.C and presented with a crystal medallion and a $500 award. Two international Teaching Excellence Award recipients will be announced at the ACBSP Accreditation and Awards Gala, one from a baccalaureate/graduate and an associate degree-granting institution. As a regional recipient, Pearsall will be a candidate for the international award.

“This is a testament of my hard work as a student, professional and now an educator. As a former UDC student, I am honored to now be giving back as a professor,” Pearsall said. “It is recognition of my life’s work in creating opportunities for excellence among my students. I am humbled by it. It keeps me going and inspires me to do more.”

As an alumnus, Pearsall graduated in the last class of Federal City College as it merged into the University of the District of Columbia in 1977. Pearsall teaches Introduction to Business, Business Communications and Economics of Personal Finance at  UDC-CC. He has taught at UDC as an assistant professor since 2015 but has previously worked as an adjunct professor, totaling 40 years. He is a mentor to student entrepreneurs and a champion for UDC financial literacy ambassadors. Pearsall is also known to take students on field trips to expose them to business and government operations and provide opportunities for them to lead workshops and speak at conferences.

Pearsall has also worked in politics, the government and the nonprofit sector. He is the president of the UDC Faculty Association/National Education Association.

The ACBSP Associate Degree Commission established the International Teaching Excellence Award in 1995 to recognize outstanding classroom teachers. The award is given to individuals who exemplify teaching excellence in the classroom annually. In 2002, the Baccalaureate Degree Commission created a similar tribute to recognize excellence in teaching at the baccalaureate/graduate degree level.

Dr. Malva Reid, UDC assistant chief academic officer for Graduate and Online Education and Academic Partnerships, nominated Pearsall. “Professor Pearsall is one of the faculty jewels of UDC, and because of all that he does for the students, his colleagues and the University, it was my honor to nominate him for the Region II, Two-Year Teaching Excellence Award.”

ACBSP’s mission is to promote continuous improvement and recognize excellence in the accreditation of business education programs worldwide. ACBSP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education as a specialized accreditation agency for business education. It is the only global accrediting body to accredit business, accounting and business-related programs at all degree levels. ACBSP has more than 1,000-member campuses in more than 60 countries. Of those campuses, 851 have achieved accreditation, and more than 160 are in candidacy for accreditation. There are more than 13,000 individual members on those campuses.

“It is more important than ever for business programs to produce graduate ready students to enter the global marketplace,” said Jeffrey Alderman, ACBSP president and CEO. “ACBSP has a mission to develop, promote and recognize best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education. Recognition of teaching excellence is one way we achieve this goal.”

A nationally distinguished educator, Pearsall is the recipient of awards from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) Award, the John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award, League of Innovations in the Community Colleges, the Excellence in Financial Literacy Education Educator of the Year Award, Institute for Financial Literacy and the JV Associates Leadership Award.
