Q&A with President Edington
Q&A with President Edington
UDC President Maurice D. Edington, Ph.D., sat down for a conversation about his first year in office, his goals and vision for the future, and his summer playlist.
Looking back at your first year as president of UDC, what makes you most proud?
It’s been a wonderful year overall, but I’m most proud that we’ve arrived at a shared vision of One UDC, and the progress we’ve already made toward that vision.
What are some of your favorite moments?
I had so much fun at the homecoming basketball game last fall. The gym was packed, the energy was high – I mean, the UDC community was on fire. And that was before we won! You can imagine how hyped the crowd at Greek row was after that.
Then of course, the whole week of inauguration events, which I will never forget. The way everything came together, I don’t think it could have been planned better. The ceremony itself will be a highlight of my life. I was incredibly honored to have so many people show up for me, from every part of my personal and professional life. Then the party! My Florida and California families combined with my new UDC family, Deep South, West Coast, everyone dancing and having a great time. It was a truly magical atmosphere.
What have been the most significant achievements for the university during this time?
I feel very fortunate to have finished the strategic planning process in my first year, as it lays out the vision for the university and the road ahead.
I’m also grateful for the significant investment we’ve seen this year from the District government, such as a $1.1M commitment to fund a housing feasibility study. In addition to the dollar amount, the funding sends a powerful message that this District government is invested in this university, our students and our future.
What are some things you learned in your first year?
Building on what I said above, one thing I’ve learned is just how deeply the District community – Mayor Bowser, D.C. Council, business leaders and others – is interested in seeing us grow and thrive. I knew it was there, but realizing the depth of that support meant a great deal.
I also came to understand not only the incredible value but also the need to focus on workforce development. UDC can and must be a leader in producing graduates who are highly qualified and prepared to step into the modern workforce.
How will this year be different?
Last year reminded me of how I felt as a freshman. Everything was new and exciting but I was also working hard to get my bearings. I was new to the District and to UDC, and it took time to get to know the culture. What’s exciting in my presidential sophomore year is that I can anticipate. I can plan better, I know what needs to get done, and how we can do it.
Speaking of which, we are moving quickly on putting together a new plan that I think folks will find really exciting, to take student life to another level. Soon!
What is your long-term vision for the university?
To see UDC become the flagship university for the nation’s 51st state. I want UDC to be a first-choice institution for students, workers and employers. I want UDC to be known everywhere for our world-class academic programs, workforce development, research and innovation. And I want to see all our stakeholders aligned in support of that vision.
How can alumni and the local community support UDC?
Get involved! Our graduates and friends across the area can support UDC by being advocates and ambassadors in their communities. Share with others about the value of a UDC education. Connect with us through one of our many arts and culture events. And of course, help with resources.
What message would you like to share with students as you move into your second year?
UDC has a place and a path for everyone. We are your university, and we’re here to support you, both while you’re here as a student, and as you progress in your career and in your life.
What was your song of the summer? / what was on your summer playlist?
Recently, it’s been “All My Life” by Lil Durk. Kendrick, of course. Sza has always been a favorite, and I’ve been loving Rod Wave. But I’ll tell you, I will ride with Mary J. Blige ‘til I die. Along with Dianne Reeves, I listen to her every day.
