Q&A with First Lady Tonya Barge Edington
What are some highlights from your first year at UDC?
Getting to know everybody has brought me so much joy over this last year. Especially the students – I’ve had the chance to not only meet a lot of students, but really get to know some of them on a personal level. They give me energy. That has been a real highlight.
Also the faculty and staff, all have been so welcoming. I feel like I’ve connected in a meaningful way with so many people here, it’s been great.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I’m looking forward to digging further into some initiatives and projects that align with my passions as well as the university’s mission. For example, I come from a large family, so making connections across generations is part of who I am. I hope to be doing more to work with our students, to help nurture and encourage them to develop their gifts and set goals that will put them on a path to success.
What’s something that might surprise us about you?
I grew up in a small town in Northwest Florida, and my father farmed to help feed our large family. I have seven siblings, and we all helped around the farm. I’ve driven a tractor and rode a horse (but only for fun). My younger brothers and I once started a small business where we sold watermelons to help buy our school clothes.
What’s something that might surprise us about Dr. Edington?
He’s the family DJ – we call him DJ Mo. He loves all kinds of music, especially hip hop and jazz. When we all get together, he’s immediately on his phone planning the playlist.
Is he a good dancer?
No.
What was on your summer playlist?
Usually, whatever DJ Mo is playing. Otherwise, I love Coco Jones – her songs ICU and Fallen – Muni Long, Ari Lennox, Jhené Aiko, and Mary J. Blige. I’m a huge CeCe Winans fan. I listen to her all the time. She has some really powerful songs that transport me to my special place.
What message do you have for new and returning Firebirds?
Enjoy this time. Being able to attend college is a gift, it really is, and it is a gift that keeps giving throughout your life. UDC can open doors and provide opportunities that you might never expect. Be proud of yourself – you’ve accomplished something great just by being here. Stay dedicated to your goals, stay committed to your purpose, and have fun!
