The University of the District of Columbia was ranked number one in Best Historically Black Colleges and Universities for 2023 by BestColleges.com, which considers academic quality, affordability and online competency, among other factors.

UDC was also ranked number one among Most Affordable and Cheapest HBCU Programs.

For academic quality, BestColleges.com compares a school’s admission rate to its enrollment rate to determine its rigor and competitiveness. It uses full-time retention rates to rank a school’s effectiveness. In determining academic quality for specific subject areas, it examines the total number of students who have graduated from that education program within the academic year.

To determine affordability, BestColleges.com looks at the average net price of the program, the percentage of students taking loans and the average loan default rate.

To evaluate a school’s online offerings, it considers the percentage of total degree programs offered online, which allows it to determine a school’s level of commitment to distance learning. It takes into account the percentage of students enrolled in online classes to determine a school’s investment in remote education. It also considers the percentage of programs offered by a school at a specific degree level to determine the school’s suitability at that level.

To achieve a perfect 100 score, a school must rank number one within each ranking category.

In addition to Best HBCUs and Most Affordable and Cheapest HBCU Programs, UDC was ranked number one in Top 10 HBCUs for Computer Science Programs, number one in Top 10 HBCUs for Early Childhood Education, number eight in Best HBCU Nutrition Programs and number 19 in Best HBCUs for LGBTQ+ Students.
