UDC hosted a climate change workshop on Thursday, March 9, in collaboration with the Energy Division, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, supported by the National Science Foundation. The event focused on innovative sustainability and resilience solutions emerging from the higher education community and how they can be taught and implemented on campuses, surrounding communities and beyond. Participants included representatives from MIT, Georgetown, Oregon State, Florida State, Cornell, Rutgers and other universities nationwide.

Other topics included how the government supports and facilitates this work and how a government-university partnership can lead U.S. efforts to address climate challenges. The workshop also focused on making colleges and universities more resilient, including paths to net zero emissions and ensuring that students are ready to work within and lead the climate-friendly businesses and industry of tomorrow and how to build and maintain green, resilient infrastructure.

Vice President for Research at UDC and Vice Chair of the National Science Board Dr. Victor McCrary provided opening remarks at the event.

“Climate change affects all of us, and adversely impacts low-income communities and communities of color. As anchors for our communities, this gathering of public and private research universities demonstrates our commitment to our regions to be the innovation laboratories, which will innovate equitable solutions for citizens. The University of the District of Columbia and our workshop partners stand ready to serve our community through research”.
