UDC Operating Remotely on Friday, Jan. 30

The University of the District of Columbia’s academic and administrative offices will conduct business remotely on Friday, Jan. 30. All on-campus activities, including athletic-related activities, are cancelled.

Campuses will reopen on Monday, Feb. 2.

Staff: Contact your immediate supervisor with questions or for further instruction regarding remote work expectations.

Faculty: Reach out to your immediate supervisor and/or the dean for questions and further instruction regarding the transition to emergency remote instruction (ERI).  The Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL) is available to support faculty with instructional continuity, including support for Blackboard, Zoom, Webex and other teaching and learning technologies.

For learning technology tools and on-demand faculty resources, please visit CAL’s website.

Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Please continue to check our website and social media channels for the latest information.

If you have any safety concerns, contact OPSEM at 202-274-5050. For all immediate emergencies, call 911.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and to UDC’s mission.

Rising Above Racism

The Fight Against Racism and Social Injustice

The UDC Counseling and Wellness Center created this new web page to support the well-being of the UDC Community. The recent events and heightened exposure of systemic racism, police brutality, and racial inequities in the U.S., as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, have threatened a sense of safety and well-being for many of us. To support your efforts to process and cope during this challenging period, we have compiled information, self-help materials, resources, and tools to aid in promoting health, understanding, peace, healing, and hope. The Counseling and Wellness Center is here and available to support all UDC students during these unprecedented times.

Counseling Services

If you feel you need assistance or support as you experience current events and perpetual racism, the Counseling and Wellness Center is still here for you. Counselors from the UDC Counseling and Wellness Center are available to meet with UDC students who would like to participate in teletherapy while the physical campus is closed. Students simply need a device with a camera, audio, and Internet access to participate in therapy sessions. In order to make an appointment, students can call (202) 274-6000 between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Students also can set up an appointment by emailing Administrative Assistant Ms. Shawnda Sanford at ssanford@udc.edu, or Counseling and Wellness Center Director Dr. Butler-Johnson at sbutlerjohnson@udc.edu. Telemental health sessions are provided in accordance with ethical guidelines and legal regulations of D.C., and state laws across the country. Students who are residing in some states will not be able to participate in telemental health with a UDC clinician due to strict out-of-state licensure prohibitions. Students who wish to seek counseling or mental health treatment with an off-campus, community-based provider can utilize our referral guide or their insurance company’s “Find a Doctor” page on the insurance plan’s website.

The Counseling and Wellness Center is also providing two drop-in support groups for the UDC student body to assist in coping during these unprecedented times. Sessions are offered on Mondays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 3 p.m. To sign up for a group session, call (202) 274-6000, or email Ms. Shawnda Sanford, Administrative Assistant, at ssanford@udc.edu, or Dr. Butler-Johnson, Counseling and Wellness Center Director, at sbutlerjohnson@udc.edu.
