UDC Operating Remotely on Thursday, Jan. 29

The University of the District of Columbia’s academic and administrative offices will conduct business remotely on Thursday, Jan. 29. All on-campus activities, including athletic-related activities, are cancelled.

Staff: Contact your immediate supervisor with questions or for further instruction regarding remote work expectations. 

Faculty: Reach out to your immediate supervisor and/or the dean for questions and further instruction regarding the transition to emergency remote instruction (ERI).  The Center for the Advancement of Learning (CAL) is available to support faculty with instructional continuity, including support for Blackboard, Zoom, Webex and other teaching and learning technologies.

Students: Due to inclement weather, the university will be closed to face-to-face operations. Instruction will be moved to emergency remote, including synchronous and asynchronous methods. Certain laboratory, clinical, and other hands-on classes for which in-person instruction is a requirement may necessitate a make-up lesson, but every effort will be made to pursue virtual learning to the extent possible. Where synchronous virtual instruction is intended, published class meeting times must be observed so that students’ schedules are not disrupted.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader community remain our top priority. We will continue to provide updates regarding the status of the university’s academic and administrative offices as conditions change.

Mechanical Engineering (ME) is used to advance the following: aerospace and automobile industries, renewable energy, nanotechnology, applied thermofluids, the development of biomedical devices and others. The Mechanical Engineering program prepares students for a variety of career opportunities through a unique combination of hands-on experience, state-of-the-art technologies, and innovative teaching methods. The Biomedical Engineering program prepares students to utilize engineering to solve problems involving human health and well-being.

A number of new faculty have joined the department to strengthen its core curriculum and foster new initiatives. The faculty are actively engaged in the innovative research in the areas of: Nanotechnology, Renewable energy, Heat Transfer, and Biomedical Engineering.  Our faculty also have strong collaborations with neighboring federal laboratories, industry, and other universities.

The UDC Department of Mechanical Engineering serves the technological needs of society, especially with regards to the constructed environment in District of Columbia and Washington Metropolitan Region. We produce a diverse population of engineers, each possessing a superior technical foundation and a well-rounded liberal education. We thrive to create new opportunities for the communities and public and private industries of District of Colombia and beyond. We create an academic environment within and outside of classroom that supports individual and group success through constant improvement. Our faculty focuses on learning, research and service – our core competencies. Our students are active learners, motivated to serve society. Our departmental administrators and staff are stewards of our self-governance, our roles within the university, and our support processes. Through individual dedication, we contribute to our group success. We value critical thinking, innovation, individual responsibility, teamwork, and leadership.

In order to prepare its graduates to pursue a productive and meaningful career characterized by continued professional growth, the primary objective of the Mechanical Engineering Department is to provide students a coherent program of instruction in order to prepare its graduates to pursue a productive and meaningful career characterized by continued professional growth. The BS in Mechanical Engineering and BS in Biomedical Engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET  (http://www.abet.org).  With this seal of approval, students are guaranteed to enjoy a modern learning experience driven by specific learning outcomes and focused around professionally-driven skills and competencies.
