RESEARCH PROJECTS

CAM-STAR has the following three main projects, focusing on ‘Devices and tools enabled by Advanced Manufacturing (AM) for Space Technology and Applied Research’. All three projects are interconnected to each other by complementary niche areas, as shown in Figure 1.

Project 1: Additively Manufactured Two-Phase Heat Exchangers with Nano-Enhanced Phase Change Material (NE-PCM) for Passive Thermal Management (PTM)

Statement of R&D Problem: Phase Change Material (PCM) heat sinks are ideal for a wide variety of applications because the latent heat associated with melting and freezing can store much more heat than sensible thermal storage alone. Both manned and unmanned spacecraft can benefit from PCM heat exchangers (HXs). Since there is no atmosphere in outer space, heat can only be rejected using radiators, which radiate the heat to space. The heat sink conditions and the power to be rejected vary constantly as the spacecraft orbits the earth or moon. Without thermal storage, the radiator must be large enough to reject the highest power at the hottest heat sink. With PCM, the radiator can be sized for the average, rather than that for the maximum power. The developed heat exchanger concept is shown in Figure 2.

 

Project 2: Nano-manufacturing of smart coatings/structures (i.e. variable emissivity) for Metal-Additive Manufacturing Components in Spacecraft Thermal Protection System (TPS)

Statement of R&D Problem: This project engineers surfaces of additively manufactured alloy and metal objects by (i) depositing variable emissivity coatings, (ii) fabricating advanced sensing devices and (iii) develop novel AM compatible TPS structures/coating materials. AM is enabling the realization of traditionally impossible engineering components and reducing the cost and time of prototyping innovative design. There is a demanding need to design and develop AM produced HXs for human rated and robotic spacecraft thermal management systems, including these outlined in Project 1. However, due to inadequate surface finishing, it is almost impossible to directly utilize as-produced, complex AM components in challenging and high-risk applications like aerospace industries, and precision machinery. How to add functional coatings/structures to their surface is another challenging yet rewarding task as proposed in this project.

 

Project 3: Advanced Manufacturing for In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU)

Statement of R&D Problem: Since 1980s, the NASA has been investigating to establish permanent bases (or lunar surface habitation systems) on the moon, and research on development of ISRU technologies on the moon also serves as a proving ground for their applications on Mars. Enhancing the understanding regarding the physical and mechanical properties of lunar regolith is important to In-situ resource utilization and processing, construction of facilities for permanent base in the moon, and landing process of lunar rovers. However, currently there is a lack of studies for fundamental behavior of drill-regolith interaction and energy-efficient geotechnical tool for In-situ measurement of engineering properties of lunar regolith. This research aims to fill this gap and contribute to NASA’s mission to characterize extraterrestrial subsurface regolith for In-situ resource utilization. Recent advancements in 3D printing technology provide a viable and efficient tool for utilizing the lunar regolith to build habitats on the moon with reduced logistics from the earth.
