(Washington, D.C.) The University of the District of Columbia (UDC), the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) and the National Science Board (NSB) joined together at a recent reception to honor U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) for his exemplary leadership as Chair of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology (HSST).

The Nov. 19 event brought HSST Committee members and staff together with leaders in science, academia and government to celebrate Chairman Lucas’ impactful contributions to science and technology policy, fostering bipartisanship and championing the critical role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as UDC in innovation and discovery.

As he prepares to turn over the gavel, Lucas recognized his “co-pilot,” Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), and praised the incoming HSST Committee Chair Brian Babin (R-Texas). He also reflected on the productive partnership he forged with his predecessor, late Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas). Together, they demonstrated that bipartisan collaboration could drive significant progress in science and technology. “We took the time to understand each other, and we recognized a shared vision,” said Lucas. “Then we worked together, and it was wonderful.”

Under Lucas’ tenure, the HSST Committee spearheaded critical legislation, including the five-year reauthorization of the National Science Foundation (NSF), positioning the United States as a global leader in innovation. The reauthorization strengthens the nation’s capacity to address emerging challenges and ensure long-term competitiveness in science and technology.

“Chairman Lucas’ leadership exemplifies the power of collaboration to advance science and innovation for the benefit of all,” said UDC Vice President for Research and NSB Vice Chair Victor McCrary. “His recognition of HBCUs as assets for our country’s national security via research and workforce development underscores the importance of fostering a wide range of talent and perspectives in STEM fields. At UDC, we are inspired by his vision and commitment to building a more inclusive and innovative future.”

CNSF echoed the sentiment in a statement lauding Lucas’ steadfast leadership and consistent approach to finding bipartisan ways to advance science policy measures. “CNSF is sad to see him step down but looks forward to working with the committee and future chair to continue Lucas’ legacy of building a strong coalition to advance our nation.”
