Message from Maurice: Welcome to the 2024-25 Academic Year at UDC!
September 4, 2024
Dear Firebird Community,
Welcome to the 2024-25 academic year at UDC!
As you may have heard, it’s “A Firebird World” here at the University of the District of Columbia. To me, that phrase carries weight beyond its nod to the iconic 1980s show “A Different World.” It speaks to what makes UDC a special and unique place: Its rigorous academic programs and excellence in student achievement. Its strong alignment with the needs of our local workforce. Its commitment to service. And, like the television show that inspired me to attend a Historically Black College or University, its proud HBCU heritage and family-like culture.
While you were away, I hope each of you had the chance to rest and reflect. At UDC, we did anything but rest this summer. We hired talented new members of our leadership team. Hosted impactful conferences and career-elevating summer internships. Applauded the accomplishments of our faculty members and alumni. Explored ways to enhance our partnerships. Opened the doors of our magnificent new library. And kicked off the school year with Welcome Back Week.
And we’re just getting started. This fall, be part of the excitement as UDC sets out to deliver on the promise. The promise of providing an engaging, fulfilling and affirming experience for all students. The promise of establishing UDC as the D.C. region’s go-to research partner. The promise of broadening our impact through greater engagement with the community. The promise of unifying all campuses, programs and stakeholders under a shared vision, One UDC. And the promise of so much more.
This year, let’s show the region—and the nation—what Firebird World is all about: Excellence. Hard work. Service. And a campus culture that is truly unparalleled.
In service,
Maurice D. Edington, Ph.D.
President
University of the District of Columbia
