Chief Academic Officer Announces Appointment of
Twinette Johnson, J.D., Ph.D., as Acting Dean of the UDC Law School

Twinette Johnson, J.D., Ph.D., as Acting Dean of the UDC Law SchoolThe University of the District of Columbia’s Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Professor Twinette Johnson, J.D., Ph.D.,  to serve as the Acting Dean of the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law (DCSL), effective August 1, 2022. Dr. Johnson is currently the DCSL’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and will step into the leadership role upon the resignation of current Dean Renée Hutchins (who was recently appointed the next Dean of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law).

Dr. Lawrence T. Potter, Jr., Chief Academic Officer, said, “President Mason and I shared with the Board our confidence in Dr. Johnson’s qualifications and abilities to assume the temporary stewardship of the Law School while we launch a formal search for the permanent replacement. Dean Renée Hutchins joins us in supporting Johnson’s leadership at this crucial time in the Law School’s ongoing advancement and growth spawned by Dean Hutchins during her brief but beneficial tenure. The experience and expertise she has acquired as a practitioner, law professor and manager, along with her collaborative skills, make her the right person at this time to serve as Acting Dean, and we are pleased that she has accepted the leadership role. We also appreciate the support of the DCSL faculty during this period.”

Twinette Johnson said, “I am truly honored to serve as Acting Dean of the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law. UDC is a remarkable institution, and I’m humbled to have the opportunity to lead its Law School.  I thank Dean Renée Hutchins for her support in this transition period and wish her well in her next decanal role. I look forward to continued support from and collaboration with University leaders and my UDC Law faculty and staff colleagues. At UDC Law, we share and work diligently toward a common goal—to ensure student success from matriculation through bar passage and law practice.
I look forward to serving the Law School community as we continue to deliver the quality education and professional training that make these outcomes possible while affirming our commitment to diversity, access, and opportunity.”

Dr. Potter added that the University will immediately launch a national search for UDC Law School’s next Dean with an executive search firm.
