University of the District of Columbia to sponsor 2021 National Cherry Blossom Festival

Events scheduled at UDC campus locations through May

WASHINGTON – The University of the District of Columbia is a proud sponsor of the 2021 National Cherry Blossom Festival®. The University is continuing a partnership with the Festival that began in 2011 during the University’s 160th anniversary celebration in conjunction with the Festival’s centennial celebration. This year, the University is a Festival Supporter and a Porch Parade and Petal Procession Sponsor.

The 2021 Festival involves several events and activities, including the “Art in Bloom” Giant Cherry Blossom Sculpture program, the citywide “City in Bloom” cherry blossom-inspired lighting and decorating program and the Porch Parade and Petal Procession. The University is supporting and sponsoring these three initiatives as follows:

City In Bloom – The University will illuminate 18 glass columns on the Dr. Cleveland L. Dennard Plaza with pink lights between Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, April 11. The 10-foot glass columns are placed throughout the plaza deck.

Porch Parade and Petal Procession presented by AMAZON – The Festival will host mini drive-by parades simultaneously throughout the District, Maryland and Virginia with 10 lead vehicles donated by TOYOTA. The University is sponsoring garage space for the vehicles to be painted by D.C.-based visual artists.

Art In Bloom presented by AMAZON – This is a premier event of the 2021 Festival. The University is hosting 1 of the 25 sites throughout the DMV to showcase an Art in Bloom Giant Cherry Blossom Sculpture. The sculpture will be placed outside the Student Center along Connecticut Avenue. Art In Bloom runs from Saturday, March 20 through Monday, May 31.

As part of the original partnership, the National Cherry Blossom Festival donated more than 40 cherry legacy trees to the new Dr. Cleveland L. Dennard Plaza as well as the Connecticut Avenue streetscape and various Community College locations. In 2016, the Festival planted an additional 10 legacy trees at the Van Ness Campus in front of the Student Center and adjacent to the School of Business and Public Administration.
