Board of Trustees member is advocate for literacy, fair housing and education
Anntoinette “Toni” White-Richardson’s love of education and history has served her well in her career and as a UDC Board of Trustees member. She champions several causes, including adult literacy, housing, economic opportunity and educational advancement at UDC. Richardson (’95) graduated from the University with a Master of Arts in Adult Education. She earned undergraduate degrees in sociology and theatre from George Washington University in 1980.
In Memoriam: Lou Stovall, art pioneer
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lou Stovall on March 3 in Washington, DC at 86. An acclaimed Cleveland Park artist and printmaker, Stovall was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from Howard University in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in art history. Stovall was a friend to the UDC community and his work can be seen at the Van Ness Campus in the Executive Suite of Building 39. Stovall represented the District for decades as an influential Black artist, collaborated with several DC artists, and received commissions from Nancy Reagan and Washington Mayor Marion Barry. Lou Stovall is survived by his wife, two children and two granddaughters.
Master sculptor selected for Dr. E.B. Henderson statue
Classically-trained master sculptor Brian Hanlon was selected to create the E.B. Henderson statue, which will be placed at the Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson Sports Complex at the Van Ness Campus, and unveiled on June 24. Hanlon first rose to national recognition in the early 1990s with the installation of “Olympian.” Hanlon takes a celebratory approach to each commission, and the artist’s goal is to inspire, awe and memorialize.
Alumna’s 50-year fight for education and health services for children
A graduate of District of Columbia Teachers College (’66), Carrie Thornhill has been impacting policy and research to improve the lives of District families for many years. She has fought to expand pre-kindergarten services for all three and four-year-olds in the District and worked toward improving education and health services for children. She currently leads the DC Early Learning Collaborative, the Dunbar Alumni Federation and Skyland Urban LLC. A UDC Board of Trustee member from 1993 to 1998, Thornhill has also been a member of the Advisory Committee on the Community College of the District of Columbia (CCDC).

On September 29, UDC received the charter for the new National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Student Chapter at the annual conference in Orlando, Florida. Two UDC chemistry majors, Jade Witter and Nazharie Brandon (former and current Student Chapter President, respectively) attended and participated in the banquet ceremonies with NOBCChE National President Rena Robinson, the Southeast Regional Chair Sharon Neal, and one of the organization’s founders, William Jackson.

REAL Deal Summer Bridge Program eases transition from high school to college, increases post-secondary success for first-year students
UDC’s REAL (Reaching Excellence in Academics and Leadership) Deal Summer Bridge Program provides first-time college students with a six-week summer program, giving them enrichment support, mentors, field trips and classroom instruction. Seventeen 2022 high-school graduates admitted to UDC completed the program held on campus for the first time in two years.
