CAUSES takes first place for innovative ‘ultra urban bmp’

The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability & Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) and the Department of Energy & Environment’s (DOEE) Bertie Backus stormwater treatment train was awarded first prize in “The Best Urban BMP in the Bay Award contest (BUBBAs).” The contest recognizes the best urban stormwater practices and programs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Van Ness Main Street celebrates community

Van Ness Main Street (VNMS) will host its first in-person event since the pandemic on Saturday, April 29, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the UDC Theater of the Arts at the Van Ness Campus. New partnership between Howard University and UDC

Beginning this year, Howard University will offer a $500,000 endowed scholarship that will support two UDC students accepted into a graduate or professional program at Howard University. The scholarship will range from $5,000 to $10,000 per student and will work to further formalize the Howard-UDC relationship.

SEAS students win second place at AMIE Design Challenge

The UDC School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) team placed second in the 2023 Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE) Design Challenge held at the Gaylord Resort on February 10. The Design Challenge was part of an industry collaboration with AMIE to demonstrate emerging technologies and how they are used to solve real-life problems. Each university team was judged on their design, problem-solving, communication and business model.

Workforce Development launches loaner laptop program

UDC’s Division of Workforce Development & Lifelong Learning (WDLL) initiated a laptop loaner program for the spring 2023 term to address WDLL students’ achievement of their academic and career goals by removing barriers to technology. As a special incentive to kick off the program, the first 100 students to apply for a laptop loaner were entered into WDLL’s loan-to-own laptop program.

UDC Factbooks are created yearly by the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning. Factbooks contain a compendium of selected facts about UDC’s institutional history, admissions, enrollment, degrees conferred, faculty salaries and other items of interest.

Chemistry students present research at the 2022 ASCB Conference

UDC undergraduate chemistry research students attended the National American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) Conference 2022 in Washington, DC from December 3-7, 2022 with Assistant Chemistry Professor Dr. Ozlem Dilek, who is fully funded and supported by ASCB ACT and FRED programs. Dilek teaches organic chemistry I and II and its labs at the University. Senior biology majors Akeem Franklyn and Talejha Shirley and junior chemistry major Julio Argueta presented their research on December 5, under the Chemical Cell Biology session titled “Bioorthogonal diagnostic fluorophores for imaging oxidative stress-induced carbonylation in live cells.” The research was done in partnership with Georgetown University Medical Center.
