Statue Unveiled at UDC to Honor Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson, “The Grandfather of Black Basketball”

UDC’s sports legacy was on full display last Saturday as a large group gathered for an unveiling ceremony of a statue honoring Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson known as the “Grandfather of Black Basketball.” The event attracted other UDC sports alumni including former Harlem Globetrotter Charles “Choo” Smith, Jr., and Basketball Africa League President Amadou Gallo Fall.

UDC honors historic Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation to ensure the enslaved were freed. The University will be closed on June 19 in observance of this historically significant holiday.
