Dr. William LathamDear Students,

We are excited to welcome you back to the University’s campuses for the 2021-2022 academic year.  To new students, welcome to Firebird Nation!  We are extremely pleased that you have made the University of the District of Columbia your choice.  To returning students, I want to express my appreciation for your resilience and resolve.  We look forward to supporting your continued success at UDC.

As we prepare to reopen and reengage on our campuses here is some general information we believe will be important to you.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

COVID-19 vaccinations will be required of all students returning to UDC campuses this fall.  To meet the requirement, students must submit proof of vaccination to the Student Health Portal by August 2, 2021.  You will not be able to attend class unless your vaccination information has been uploaded.  Students may only request an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for specific medical or religious reasons.   For instructions on how to upload your COVID-19 documentation and other information check out the Fall Opening FAQs.  The continued health and safety of everyone in the community is our top priority.

New Student Orientation

All new students are required to participate in the New Student Orientation (NSO) starting July 7 – August 13, 2021.   NSO will combine online resources, with live, virtual activities, all geared to helping you successfully transition to the university.  Upon completion, new students will be able to register for classes.

New F-1 International Students

We look forward to welcoming new international students to UDC this fall.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic your I-20s will be emailed to you along with information on travel restrictions, COVID-19 testing and quarantine and next steps.  For more information or assistance please contact International Student Services at

Course Registration, Advising and Accessibility

Registration is open for continuing students.  Classes will be offered face-to-face, as well as in virtual/remote, hybrid and HYFLEX formats.  If you have questions, you can contact your staff or faculty advisor for assistance.   Students with disabilities may contact the Accessibility Resource Center to request accommodations.

Student Services and Activities

UDC provides several services, programs, and activities to help you succeed academically and personally.  We are planning for a vibrant student experience this fall with in-person services, on campus events and student club and organization activities.  Virtual services will also be available to meet the needs of all students.  Take some time to get familiar with the many resources available to you.

We will provide additional information about returning to campus and community life during the summer.  Please continue to take care of yourselves and your families.  We look forward to welcoming you back to campus and the start of the fall semester.

In Firebird Spirit,

William U. Latham, Ph.D.
