Dr. William LathamDear Students,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year! I am counting on you to make this your best year at the University of the District of Columbia. We are here to support you every step of the way. For returning students, we are glad to have you back as you continue your journey to graduation.

For students who are new to the Firebird Nation, we encourage you to make the most of your time here. Your college experience will be what you make it. Your opportunities will only be limited by the limits you place on yourself.

Our Fall 2020 semester will begin on September 8, 2020. The University will operate in Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI) mode due to the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. We will mostly use remote or virtual (synchronous) instruction. There will be some in-person or blended/hybrid learning for labs, studios, health-related clinics, highly specialized research, and other learning that cannot be completed in a remote instruction setting.

  • synchronous/remote (learning in real time)
    • Students enrolled in a remote class will meet with their professors online via the Blackboard Collaborate web conference platform at scheduled times with set deadlines and due dates. Students will access learning materials, assignments, and participate in discussions via Blackboard.
  • blended/hybrid (online and in-person)
    • Students taking a hybrid class will engage in a combination of online/remote and face to-face instruction. Students will complete their work assignments, discussions, research, and projects online at a flexible pace with some scheduled face-to-face class time with professors and fellow students.
  • asynchronous/online (learning on your own time)
    • Students taking an online class can access course content 24-hours a day, progress independently, and have discussions with their instructors and fellow learners using Blackboard. Deadlines and due dates for assignments, tests, and projects will be set by your professors.

If you have questions regarding the format of your classes, you are welcome to inquire with your academic advisor or professors. They can provide you with the applicable delivery method of instruction.

As you start a new academic year, take advantage of the many services available to help you achieve your full potential. The Student Success Center offers many programs to keep you on the road to graduation and professional success, such as tutoring and workshops on improving time management, note-taking, and test preparation. Remember that the Library and Career Services are also here to help. Finally, I encourage you to get involved, to participate in student government, and to take part in the array of opportunities and initiatives hosted by Student Development and Campus Life throughout the year.

We are here to be your guide on the side as you become the best version of yourself. Let’s make it a great year!
