Dear Firebirds,

Welcome back to the University of the District of Columbia campuses!

This week ushers in feelings of hope and excitement as we begin the fall semester. It is essential to reflect on where we were just 18 months ago—from pivoting to emergency remote course instruction, employing robust processes to retain and support enrolled students, to converting our operations to online. Our students, faculty, and staff rose to the challenge, and in many ways, we are stronger than ever.

Despite a global health crisis, it has been a momentous year for our community. We celebrated our graduates through two virtual commencements. We added talented new faculty and staff. We excelled in online instructional delivery. We secured resources to continue improving salaries, our programs, and our infrastructure. We strengthened relationships with the business community and foundations.  These feats are a testament to the resilience and support of our entire UDC community.  Thank you for your dedication and contribution to these efforts.

We remain committed to your health and safety as you return to campus. Yet, we all must remain steadfast in protecting each other and play our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19 within our UDC bubble.

  • COVID-19 Vaccinations: Students, faculty, and staff on campus must be vaccinated, and regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear a mask on campus. The few individuals who have been exempted from the vaccination requirement have been carefully vetted by Human Resources and will be tested weekly.
  • Masks: Consistent with CDC guidelines, everyone must wear a mask in all public or indoor spaces, including classrooms, regardless of vaccination status. If you see someone without a mask in an area where they should be wearing one, politely remind them that masks are required on UDC campuses.

Please visit the RISE website to learn more about what we are doing to keep you safe. I also encourage you to attend an upcoming Town Hall to ask your questions.

UDC’s future is full of potential, and uncertainty is part of the equation we must anticipate. We are prepared for everything we know, yet some things remain beyond our control. In the end, it is up to us, Team UDC, to protect, support, and strengthen each other and to continue to help our students reach their highest levels of human potential.

Stay the course, and the Firebird Nation will continue to rise!

Ronald Mason, Jr., President
University of the District of Columbia
