A trombone belonging to the late jazz musician and UDC professor Calvin Jones took pride of place at the university's newly-renovated Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. A host of local and national participants attended a Sept. 19 reception to mark the re-opening of the archives.

Jones taught at the University for over 27 years and developed its highly acclaimed jazz program. He died in October 2004

Jones' former colleague Judith Korey, curator of the archives said, "this represents a step towards fulfilling our vision for the Calvin Jones Center for Jazz Studies- a vision that unites UDC's outstanding jazz program, an exciting events calendar-JAZZ Alive, and the internationally acclaimed Felix E.Grant Jazz Archives.

"The center will provide the opportunity to enhance and expand our existing programs. It will be a catalyst for dynamic, innovative and visionary leadership that embraces a multidisciplinary approach to the study and appreciation of jazz. And of course, it will enrich the cultural life of this city by helping to develop future performers and educators, preserving local jazz history and expanding jazz audiences," she explained.

The Colosseum of Rome and the Vatican were among one of the favorite places visited by students.

The facility is named for Felix E. Grant, the internationally renowned jazz authority and legendary radio personality who donated his collection to the university.

The recent renovations of the archives provides a state-of-the-art facility for one of the greatest treasures at the university which has been housed there since 1997.

The Jazz archives were established as a research and resource center for the study, preservation, and continued development of one of America's greatest original cultural treasures. In 1998, the Felix E. Grant Jazz archives moved to larger quarters within the university's Learning Division.

"The Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives is one of the greatest treasures at the university. Our primary role at the archives is to preserve and provide access to the materials in the collections and this wonderful facility provides an environment that will allow us to continue our work towards fulfilling this mission," professor Korey said.
