Tri-States Association Scholarship

The University of the District of Columbia Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for the TRI-STATE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP.  The scholarship was established to provide opportunities for students enrolled at the University of the District of Columbia to complete their college education and acquire marketable skills, which will enhance their abilities to succeed as productive members of society.

The TRI-STATE ASSOCIATION is a fraternal organization composed of members of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (I.B.P.O.E.W.) from Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

AWARD:              The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books for one academic year.

ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must reside in the District of Columbia and must be enrolled in a full-time course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree at the University of the District of Columbia.  Essays must be typewritten and double-spaced.  Applicants must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.  While the scholarship is open to all UDC students, preference will be given to students who are relatives or members of the I.B.P.O.E.W.  Applicants must write a 500 word essay from a topic listed below:

1.   Choose a favorite movie, book, quote or quotation and explain how it personally impacted your education at the University of the District of Columbia.

2.   Ronald Heifetz, one of the world’s leading authorities on leadership said:  “People don’t learn by staring into a mirror; people learn by encountering difference.”  Reflect on a situation at the University of the District of Columbia in which you encountered difference and describe the circumstance.  What did this experience teach you?

3.   President William L. Pollard selected the theme of the University of the District of Columbia:  “A new day, a new opportunity.”  Write what this means to you.

4.   “Education remains the key to both economic and political empowerment.  That is why the schools charged with educating African Americans have perhaps, the greatest, the deepest challenge of all.”  Barbara Jordon, Lawyer and U.S. Congressperson
