UDC Announces Opening of Farmer’s Markets

Washington, DC – The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is pleased to announce the start of its 2017 farmers’ market season. CAUSES operates markets at two locations, Van Ness and East Capitol Street, and supports several others.

The UDC Van Ness Farmer’s Market, in collaboration with Van Ness Main Street and the National Latino Farmers & Ranchers Trade Association, is located at 4340 Connecticut Avenue N.W. in front of the David A. Clarke School of Law. The market will be open Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., May 20 until November 25.

The East Capitol Farmer’s Market is located at 5901 East Capitol Street S.E. (directly across from the Capitol Heights Metro Station at East Captiol Urban Farm). The market will be open from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., May 27 until November 18, and is operated in collaboration with the Anacostia Economic Development Corporation (AEDC).

The UDC farmers’ markets are managed by the Center for Sustainable Development & Resilience, a land-grant center of CAUSES. The markets offer fresh produce from area vendors, including local farmers, bakers and artisans, to D.C. neighborhoods.

“We are privileged to serve residents of the District by offering unique opportunities for community enhancement. Our farmers’ markets are a critical component of this endeavor,” said Dr. Dwane Jones, Director of Center for Sustainable Development & Resilience.

Planned events for this season include live music, cooking demonstrations, and information about food safety and ethnic crops. UDC’s nutrition educators and chefs will also frequent the markets to offer nutrition information, cooking tips and other information to the public.
