CAS Reads Big Lecture – Tuesday, October 29, 2019 – Dr. Bart Landry

CAS Reads Big - 10-20-19

The College of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the UDC Firebird Film Festival, invites faculty, students, and guests, to attend the first CAS Reads Big Lecture for the fall semester. On Tuesday, October 29, 2019, we will feature Dr. Bart Landry, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, who will discuss his book, The New Black Middle Class in the Twenty-First Century.  This work analyzes the emergence of the African American middle class early in the 20th century, and compares it with the white middle class of the 1970s and 1980s.

The lecture also serves as a pre-event for the University’s “Wealth! The 3rd Annual Firebird Film Festival,” which begins the following day, October 30, and runs through November 2, 2019. More information about the festival and the scheduled films, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities can be found here: https://www.udc.edu/udcfilmfestival/.  The goal of the festival is to raise awareness about many of the urgent social issues affecting the nation, and to explore roles education might play to close wealth and income gaps in America.

The lecture begins at 6:00 p.m., and will be followed by a book signing and reception in the Student Center, Heritage Hall, 4200 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20008. The event is free and open to the public. Thank you.
