Veterans Day Observation 2022

On Saturday, November 6, more than 125 veteran and non-veteran volunteers participated in a community service event in observance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Volunteers participated in many activities to enhance and beautify the UDC Backus Food Hub and the Community College campus. Their efforts included painting a wall, preparing mulch paths for the community garden and building compost bins, a shuttle bus stop, garden gazebo, new benches and ADA raised beds for seniors.  The volunteer event was hosted by CAUSES, in partnership with The Mission Continues (TMC). The Mission Continues is a national nonprofit organization that connects military veterans with new missions in under-resourced communities. The day included a presentation of a wreath to honor and memorialize two 9/11 victims on Flight 77, Asia Cottom, who was a student of the now-defunct Bertie Backus Middle School, and Sarah Clark, who was a teacher at the Middle School.
