UDC Education Unit Celebrates CAEP Accreditation Award ImageThe Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accredits the University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Education Unit for demonstrating excellence in the areas of content and pedagogy, clinical experiences, selectivity, program impact, and capacity for continuous improvement.  CAEP advances excellent educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality and supports continuous improvement to strengthen P-12 student learning.  CAEP is the only recognized National accreditor for educator preparation.

The UDC team, led by Division of Education, Health, and Social Work chairperson Dr. Anika Burtin and Unit director Professor Ayanna Kelley, worked tirelessly over a 15 month period to move through the Self-Study and site visit components of the accreditation review. Using the opportunity to forecast new opportunities for enhancing program operations and student outcomes, the UDC team built a comprehensive and systematic template from which future program training models, methods, and assessments will be guided. The team’s efforts were commended by the chair of the site visit committee.

Dr. Burtin and her team members are to be applauded for their commitment to quality in educator preparation. This successful accreditation outcome honors the University’s predecessor institutions and our legacy of high-quality teacher education dating back to the Miner School for Colored Girls.
