HEARMELEAD Busboys and Poets Performance – May 4, 2018

“Speaking the truth requires tremendous courage”

–  Belinda Mason, First Lady of the University and honorary chair of the #hearmelead Advisory Board

On Friday, May 4, 2018, 11 UDC #hearmelead students took to the iconic 14th and V Streets’ Busboys and Poets’ stage to share the culmination of 16 weeks of leadership development work using the vehicle of creative writing.  The spoken word performances were spirited and inspiring.  A full house of students, faculty, staff, friends, and family members applauded the performance.  The evening began with a piece from the #hearmelead instructor and mentor, Alexa Patrick, and each of the students followed with their own powerful stories of self-reflection, empowerment, and healing.

We were honored to have President and Mrs. Mason among the supporters.  Mrs. Mason serves as the honorary chair for the initiative, and as a token of her support of the students, she presented each of the students with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  #hearmelead is supported by a Community Action Project grant from the American Association of University Women.   This is the program’s second year.
