How does the Foundation work with the University?
The UDC Foundation Inc. serves as the primary link between the University of the District of Columbia and private, professional, and business communities in the District and the nation. Its primary responsibility is to work with the Office of Development to raise awareness of the need for private support, to solicit gifts on behalf of the University, and to effectively carry out its fiduciary responsibilities in the management of the assets received by the Foundation.

Why does UDC need private support?
UDC is government-assisted rather than government-supported. This type of assistance is critically important, but it continues to decline as a percentage of the University’s total operating budget, making private contributions from alumni and friends increasingly important, if UDC is to fulfill its mission --- to provide comprehensive post-secondary education, conduct research, and provide public service to solve urban community problems for the betterment of the quality of life for residents of the District and beyond.

How does the UDC Foundation serve the University?
The UDC Foundation exists solely for the University of the District of Columbia’s benefit, serving as the preferred channel for private gifts to all areas of the University. The UDC Foundation is governed by a board of directors that elects its officers.
Through annual giving programs, planned gifts (wills, trusts, and other methods of giving), and special-purpose projects, the Foundation works with the Office of Development and all colleges, schools and other units of UDC to generate private support from alumni and friends.
In addition, the Foundation hosts an annual fundraising gala to help the University celebrate its mission. This event is a wonderful way to bring our loyal friends and supporters together to honor our student scholars, thank our President for his diligence and hard work, and show gratitude to eminent faculty and prominent alumni. Distinguished guests often include the mayor of the District of Columbia, Congress men and women and other city officials. Our annual gala is a wonderful collaborative effort to ensure that the University has the resources needed to continue to lift the bar for quality education for UDC students. The gala is typically in late April. Please click here or contact the UDC Foundation Office at 202-274-5312, for more information on our next gala. Your attendance and contribution to the UDC Foundation is welcomed and appreciated.

What are UDC’s fundraising priorities and who sets them?
Because the UDC Foundation was established to facilitate the University’s mission, the University President sets the Foundation’s major initiatives with the concurrence of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
College and academic department fundraising priorities are recommended and approved by deans and UDC’s administration with advice and cooperation from the Office of Development. However, some fundraising projects evolve from the ideas of external individuals or constituencies. Office of Development staff members work with donors who demonstrate an interest in supporting any part of UDC.
