If I am an international student, what are steps taken for admission into the University?

Undergraduate Admission:
The University enrolls students who are citizens of foreign countries. Academic achievement is an important factor in consideration for admission. Selection of international students who have not attended other colleges is based on the academic secondary school certificate, such as WASC, GCE, baccalaureate or other external national examinations, used in the student?s country as a terminal secondary certificate. Official copies of certificates, transcripts and other supporting documents must be received, in English, directly from the examining board, registrar or other official designee responsible for true and legal certification of documents. All documents should be mailed directly to the Office of the Registrar and Enrollment Management, University of the District of Columbia, 4200 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Building 39, Level A, Washington, DC 20008, from the issuing school or board.

Students who do not hold a school-leaving certificate at a level equivalent to high school graduation in the United States may take the General Education Development Test (GED) or graduate from an accredited high school in the United States.

International Students whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a minimum score of 500. Evidence of completion of two college level English courses at an accredited American college or university may be submitted to satisfy this requirement. Students with TOEFL score below 500 will be recommended for classes in English as a Second Language (ESL). Students without TOEFL scores must take the Comprehensive English Language Test (CELT).

The University is approved by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to enroll international students in F-1 Student immigration status. Applicants who will require F-1 Student certification (Form I-20) must file an affidavit of financial support with the Office of the Registrar and Enrollment Management at the time of application. The affidavit must show that the applicant has adequate financial sponsorship to pay all educational and living expenses associated with the proposed course of study.

Graduate Admission

  • Submit an official transcript or a detailed marks certificate showing course work and grades. If the certificate or documents in a language other than English, a certified and notarized English translation must be provided. If the institution at which the courses were taken issues only one official copy to the certificate, a certified copy of the certificate may be submitted. However, both the certificate and the translation must be certified by an official government agent or authorized official, such as a notary public. The application fee paid must be in U.S. currency.
  • A financial affidavit of support certificate is required with the application indicating funding resources. These funds are to be certified in U.S. currency only.
  • Official results of the Educational Testing Service/Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) should be forwarded directly from the testing agency. The minimum required score is 550. (This does not apply to applicants whose native language is English, or if the applicant has an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.)
  • The minimum required score for the Graduate Management Test (GMAT) is 850.

All applicants must submit scores for the GRE (Graduate record Exam).

What are the deadline dates for admissions for an international student?

To apply for Fall, the international student?s paperwork must be in by May 1st of that same year. To apply for Spring, the international student?s paperwork must be in by September 15th of the previous year. (Note: B, F, and J visas).
