Members of Congress Show Their Support for UDC

Washington, DC - Twenty-one members of Congress attended a reception May 10th at Rayburn House Office building in support of the University of the District of Columbia.  UDC President Allen L. Sessoms welcomed the members and approximately 70 other guests and supporters of the only public university in Washington, DC and the only urban land-grant university in the United States.  Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton addressed the crowd saying, “Our state university is a critical – vital – resource for residents of our nation’s capital.  As UDC’s community college continues its growth into the federal sector with workforce development, the four year college is making its mark by adding respected graduate and undergraduate programs.”

“The turnout for this event is a clear indication of Congress’ interest in the success of our university,” said Dr. Sessoms.  “We have made tremendous progress in the last two plus years, and with Congress’ continued support, UDC will become the shining example of public higher education for this nation.”

Sessoms listed among the most notable achievements, the creation of UDC’s community college, which is operating currently at three separate sites across the city with more locations being planned.  Established in August of 2009, enrollment at the community college increased by more than 50% in just its first year.  Sessoms also illustrated increased enrollment at UDC is an indication of the demand for public higher education in Washington.

“We are elevating this university to a world class standard,” said Dr. Sessoms.   “Our students deserve the best.”
