UDC Joins ECC in Div II Athletics
Washington, DC - The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds athletics program has been formally accepted into NCAA East Coast Conference Division II. This is the first time UDC’s athletics program has been officially affiliated with an NCAA conference and is seen as another step in the university’s comprehensive transformation efforts.
Full ECC membership provides UDC with conference experience in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, women's indoor and outdoor track & field, men's soccer, and men's and women's tennis and volleyball. The ECC is nationally strong in men's and women's lacrosse, which supports UDC’s strategic plan to add lacrosse in the future.
“The ability to compete in conference championships will provide an outstanding athletic experience for our student-athletes and will support our recruiting efforts,” said UDC Athletic Director Patricia Thomas. “This also gives us a chance to compete for the Commissioner's Cup as well as gain exposure through ECC Sports TV, supporting our branding initiatives regionally as well as nationally.”
Conference members include the University of Bridgeport, Queens College, Mercy College, St. Thomas Aquinas College, Dowling College, Molloy College, and the New York Institute of Technology. Membership in the ECC allows UDC to qualify for NCAA tournament play through conference championship participation and success.
As the only urban land-grant institution in the United States, the University of the District of Columbia (www.udc.edu) supports a broad mission of education, research and community service across all member colleges and schools, which include the Community College of the District of Columbia, the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences, the College Arts & Sciences, the School of Business and Public Administration, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the David A.
