UDC Names New Public Safety Director

Washington, DC - The University System of the District of Columbia announces the appointment of Larry Volz as the new Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.  Chief Volz will be responsible for directing a public safety staff, including campus police officers, covering more than a dozen locations in the District of Columbia.

Chief Volz comes to UDC from the University of Maryland at College Park, where he was an Assistant Director of Public Safety.  He spent 30 years as a sworn police officer in the University of Maryland System, rising through the ranks to become Assistant Chief, providing command leadership and direction in a number of critical areas.  Chief Volz has received many commendations during his career with UMDPS, including medals of valor and merit and President’s (UMD) and Governor’s Awards for service.

“Chief Volz brings a wealth of experience to our dynamic locations within our system,” said University System President Dr. Allen L. Sessoms.  “He comes to us with a vast range of police management skills and leadership experience, including special events management, patrol, and crime prevention.  He’s a perfect fit for us as we expand to new locations within our city.”

“I am looking forward to this challenge,” said Chief Volz.  “UDC presents some unique opportunities, and I am excited to be a part of its growth.”

Chief Volz will begin his new position July 16th.

UDC continues its upward movement within the District of Columbia and beyond.  The system is planning to become a residential campus within the next year to offer students an opportunity to have an “away from home” college experience.  The system is also adding locations for the community college, including a headquarters location at 801 North Capitol Street, NE near Union Station, the former Backus Middle School site on South Dakota Avenue, Northeast and the PR Harris School site in Southeast.

As the only urban land-grant institution in the country, the University System of the District of Columbia (www.udc.edu) supports a broad mission of education, research and community service across all member colleges and schools, which include the University of the District of Columbia (David A. Clarke School of Law, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences, College Arts & Sciences, School of Business and Public Administration and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences) and the Community College of the District of Columbia.
