UDC Offers Fresh Food and Fresh Ideas as it Promotes Healthy Living and Strengthens Community Connections
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) hosts the highly anticipated grand re-opening of its Farmers' Market for the 2010 market season.
Washington, DC - The University of the District of Columbia’s Farmers’ Market is back for another year, offering fresh food and fresh ideas to help District residents improve their quality of life. All are invited to join the fun on Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, at UDC’s Van Ness campus, as the university’s Community Outreach and Extension Services (COES) kicks off the 2010 Farmers’ Market season with a grand re-opening celebration.
The celebration will feature a hearty selection of fresh food provided by local and regional farmers, as well as fresh ideas presented by UDC’s Cooperative Extension Service and local non-profits. Official greetings will be extended by representatives of the White House, the US Department of Agriculture, the D. C. Council and University officials. The Boy Scouts will conduct the official flag presentation and lead the audience in the pledge of allegiance and a wonderful selection of jazz music will be performed by UDC’s own alum Mr. Pete Muldoon. Patrons and attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about the University’s latest addition, the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), scheduled to launch Fall 2010.
The Farmers’ Market kicks off on Saturday May 15th and will operate every Saturday from 7:30 am – 1:30 pm until November. Each week market patrons will enjoy good food, good fun and great information. Residents will be able to speak directly with community experts regarding nutrition, diet and health, environment and natural resources, 4-H, youth development and parenting and community and economic development. In addition to filling bags with fresh food, market patrons will have access to free publications full of information to help improve their quality of life in the urban environment.
