Washington, DC– Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will deliver the keynote address during commencement exercises for the University of the District of Columbia and the Community College of DC May 8, 2010.

Mr. Tagliabue is a national figure, having served with distinction as commissioner of the National Football League from 1989-2006.  He currently serves as senior of counsel in the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP in its Washington, DC and New York offices, where he advises clients on strategic matters in the communications and media, technology, and international sectors.  He remains as a business advisor to the NFL.

“Having someone of Tagliabue’s stature on our campus reinforces our efforts to become a national and international institution of distinction,” said Dr. Allen L. Sessoms, President of the University System of the District of Columbia.  Dr. Sessoms pointed out that Tagliabue’s presence might spark more ‘buzz’ about UDC’s plans to add a football team to its slate of athletic programs and the school’s anticipated move toward Division I athletics in 2013.

The University of the District of Columbia has a long and proud tradition of celebrating the achievements of its graduates.  This year, two individuals will receive honorary degrees from the university, the highest accolade that can be bestowed on someone deemed by university officials to have had a significant and lasting impact on society through their fields of endeavor.

Mr. Tagliabue will receive an honorary “Doctor of Laws” to salute his contributions to society in the areas of sports and law.  Ms. Kathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest African American owned and operated broadcast-company in the nation, will receive an honorary “Doctor of Humane Letters” degree.
