Student Health Insurance Update: Waiver System Open for Fall 2014

Attention ALL Students (new, continuing, transfer, readmit, international):

The University of the District of Columbia, under the guidelines of the Affordable Care Act - healthcare reform law, has elected to provide our students health insurance plan (SHIP) through United Health Care. The DCMR8 Rule mandates that each student attending this university must have health insurance coverage. Through meticulous decision making, United Health Care was again selected as the best and most affordable option for our students. The annual premium cost for this insurance will be $1,189.00. This is an increase from the previous year but it is also a more extensive and comprehensive coverage than what was formerly offered.

Please feel free to visit the insurance website ( for more information about the coverage provisions. If you already have comparable health insurance coverage and wish to waive out of the plan offered at the university, you can do so at www.firststudent.comPlease be advised, you can waive out of the insurance 24 – 48 hours after you have registered for classes (you have until September 7, 2014 to submit your online waiver form). After this date, you will not be able to waive and you will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan. The student health insurance charge is non-refundable after you are enrolled in the plan; NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE AFTER THIS DATE.

There will be a representative from the insurance company on the Van Ness main campus for the August 18th Orientation Fair as well as the UDC-CC orientation sessions August 20th through August 22nd to answer any questions that you may have regarding the insurance coverage. At UDC we promote health and wellness for all of our students and we feel that providing this comprehensive health coverage for those in need of health insurance contributes to that goal. If you have any additional questions at any time please contact University Health Services at 202-274-5030 or visit us on the web at .

Have a healthy and successful academic year!
