The New Center

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Research and Training Center, will be the first of its kind to serve undergraduate students on the campus of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). Designed to serve as a hub for unique and innovative ideas and activities in the STEM disciplines - the new center will offer specialized laboratory and research course in biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computer science and environmental science.

In addition to the research and laboratory courses provided by the STEM Center, students will have the opportunity to conduct on-site and off-site independent research, with a faculty mentor or outside researcher. Selected students will serve as research assistants and receive a financial stipend.

Enrichment Activities

The new STEM Center will have enrichment activities so that students can improve their skills in general education coursework. A STEM Summer Bridges Program (SSBP) is also offered to incoming freshmen in need of general education improvement, before taking college level courses.

Once students are accepted into the new STEM Center Program, they will participate in various workshops, seminars, research focus groups, mini-science sessions and lectures from those in the scientific community.

The Financial Funding

In 2004 the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) was awarded a $2.45-million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Research and Training Center - also know as STEM. Funding for the new training center will be dispersed to the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

Financial aid is available to all qualified students accepted into the STEM Center Program
